Tungsten electrode color codes: what do they mean for welding?
Tungsten electrode color codes (tip color marking) are important identifiers used to distinguish material types, electron emission performance, and welding applications. Different colors correspond to different doping elements and welding characteristics, making them suitable for different current types, base materials, and welding conditions. In Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding, welders can quickly identify electrode type and usage by color without checking the full grade designation.
Tungsten electrode color systems follow ISO 6848 and AWS A5.12 standards. Color coding is generally consistent across manufacturers and is used for fast selection and on-site identification.

How to Select CTIA’s Tungsten Electrode by Welding Requirements?
(1) DC welding for steel, stainless steel, titanium, and copper: grey (2% ceriated tungsten) or sky blue (2% lanthanated tungsten) is recommended. Both are non-radioactive, offer stable arc starting, and long service life.
(2) AC welding for aluminum and magnesium alloys: green (pure tungsten) or white (zirconiated tungsten) is recommended. Both maintain stable tip shape under alternating current conditions.
(3) High load or thick plate welding: red (2% thoriated tungsten) or violet (3% thoriated tungsten) can be used, or gold/blue (1.5%-2% lanthanated tungsten) as safer alternatives.
Although thoriated tungsten electrode offers excellent performance, it contains naturally radioactive thorium-232. Grinding dust poses internal radiation risks. Many countries restrict its civilian use, and lanthanated or ceriated alternatives are recommended.
