WRe Ejecting Needles
WRe ejecting needles are made from precision straightened fine wire of tungsten-rhenium. Drawing is accomplished by pulling through progressively smaller dies and annealing the swaged rod. As the cross-sectional area of the wire decreases, the number of dislocations per unit area increases, the movement of dislocations is hindered, and the material is subjected to greater cold working, thus, the strength and hardness values increase systematically.
The addition of rhenium to tungsten wire increases the recrystallization temperature and changes the grain structure after recrystallization. After alloying, the rhenium atoms displace the tungsten body-centered cubic lattice, causing the lattice to shrink, resulting in a denser material, where the rhenium atoms restrict dislocation movement, increasing strength, hardness and wear properties.
Rhenium also increases the ductility of the thimble. At 3% rhenium, the ductility of the tungsten-rhenium thimble is nearly 34%, while the ductility of the tungsten probe is about 8%. The alloy containing 3% rhenium refines the grain boundaries, thermally stabilizes the microstructure and improves penetration resistance, and imparts higher ductility, flexural strength, and hardness characteristics for longer service life.
